The Solar System My setup doesn’t really do justice to most solar system
objects. Even the major planets
(Jupiter and Saturn) need to be amplified by the use of a Barlow lens to give
any detail. However, a cheap webcam
can be used with free software to get some surprisingly good images. I did manage to get some good images of the Transit of
Venus in June 2004 (before my mount gave up the ghost in the hot
sunshine!). I’ve also managed to
image Pluto fairly easily. The gallery includes shots of comets and animated GIF
files of the motion of Pluto and the asteroid Toutatis over 30 minutes at its
close pass by the Earth in September 2004. More recent images are of Comet McNaught and the lunar
eclipse of 3rd March 2007 and Comet Holmes. The Solar System Gallery is best viewed with screen
resolutions of 1024*768 or higher.
